ABOUT THE 1 HOUR WEBINAR:
The move from Year 6 in Primary School to Year 7 in secondary school can be an anxious time for pupils and stressful for parents. For most children, it will be the first time that they have moved schools and left the security of the classmates that they have known and learned alongside since Year 1.
Research into this ‘rite of passage’ reveals that many pupils can regress by up to three months after transfer to the secondary school. Support for Year 7 pupils usually tails off after the first half-term and this can be challenging for many pupils. It is also recognised that much of the remainder of the time in Year 7 can be spent catching back up to the level of attainment pupils had achieved at the end of Year 6.
This webinar by Steve Waters, a collaboration between the Mental Health Group and the Teach Well Alliance, identifies successful strategies in Year 6 and Year 7 which reduce pupils’ anxieties and combat the fallback in attainment. It also includes helpful tips that the primary and secondary schools can share with parents. The webinar emphasises that transfer is less stressful when the primary school, secondary school and parents are partners in the process.
